Canon 30D + Tokina 12-24mm at 12mm. 1/1000 sec at f/10, ISO 640. No flash. For the vast majority
of photos I used one of the two rigs shown above: either the Canon
600mm f/4L lens mounted on an Induro carbon-fiber tripod with a huge,
homemade flash extender attached, or the Canon 400mm f/4
image-stabilized lens (with much smaller flash extender) that you see
slung over my shoulder. Both rigs include a Canon EOS 1D Mark III
camera (10 Megapixels), which I operate exclusively in RAW mode.
All camera settings are listed below each image. For wide-angle
shots such as the one shown above, I generally used my old Canon 30D
with a Tokina 12-24mm wide-angle lens set to around 12mm. For
extremely close birds I sometimes used the Canon 70-200 f/2.8L lens.
